13 Best Jobs for Introverts

13 Best Jobs For Introverts

Does this sound like you?

I love people, appreciate the uniqueness of individuals and enjoy a good conversation or party. In some ways, I’m a very social person.

But I confess: I really don’t like “networking,” being part of a “team,” or any other situations where I have to sell myself or share responsibility with others. At heart, I’m a loner and nonconformist.

Some of you can relate to this. You feel uncomfortable with books on how to market yourself. You don’t want to spend your time trying to win friends or influence people. And so you may have wondered: How can you make money working alone?

Fortunately, you don’t have to spend your workday interacting with other people or sharing decision-making responsibility. Here are some of the best businesses, investments and jobs for introverts.

More on introverts and the meyers briggs test here.

  • According to a 2012 piece in Psychology Today, introverts make up as much as half of the population. They prefer to spend time alone or in small groups, to focus on one task at a time and observe a situation before getting involved. For them, the kind of glad-handing and small-talking required in that new job would be a nightmare. They’d rather stay comfortably put at their old desk and salary.

Best Jobs for Introverts

Most jobs involve working with others, and all jobs require some degree of interaction with your employer or supervisor, if not other employees or clients.

But clearly some positions involve less teamwork than others.

Here are some of the best options for introverts:

Value Investing

1. Archivist

The median annual wage of an archivist is $50,500, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. You’ll spend your day organizing and maintaining historical documents in quiet rooms with few interruptions. What’s not to like?

2. Court Reporter

A courtroom is full of people, but as a court reporter, you rarely interact with others. And you do, it’s only to read back a few lines of testimony. The median annual wage of $51,320 isn’t bad either.

3. Become a Certified Closing Agent.

You Earn Extra Income,  Set your Own Hours, and the Income is Fantastic! ($75-$200 per appointment).

•You can make $75 to $200 in a single signing, and a signing takes about an hour.

Part time loan signing agents generally do one to three signings per week, – about $300 to $500 dollars extra a week. while full time agents can do 3-8 signings in a day which is about $400 to over $1,000  dollars in a day.

  • You can start part-time and work around your existing work schedule since most signings occur on evenings and weekends.  Simply pick up work when you want, and keep your day job

• Next, you can work from home and be your own boss. Owning your own business can allow you to take advantage its many benefits, such as tax write-offs.

• You have the ability to make money almost immediately.

It pays nearly 9X more than driving for Uber.  However, it requires you to take a class and invest time and money.  If you can do that, then you can start making up to $200 per signing.  Learn More about the Loan Signing System here.

4. Caretaker

CBS’s Sunday Morning recently profiled Steve Fuller, the winter caretaker of Yellowstone National Park.  Fuller enjoys being alone for months and hours away from the nearest store (by snowmobile), but he says when he explains his job, “I usually start off with caretaker, and their immediate response is, ‘Have you seen ‘The Shining’?”

You can find all kinds of caretaking positions. Some are just house-sitting jobs and others involve working with the public. But some positions let you live alone and quietly care for a lodge or other facility in the off-season.

Pay varies greatly. You’ll find these positions on websites like CaretakerJobs.com and in the Caretaker Gazette.

5. Astronomer

How would you like to work by yourself much of the time, observing the skies or interpreting data? You’ll be well-paid for your loneliness, as the median annual wage of astronomers is $104,740.

Here are some other jobs where you’ll have minimal interaction with others:

6.  Writing Corporate Slogans and Taglines

Product slogans can be very short, like Nike’s “Just Do It.” They’re rarely much longer than Hallmark’s “When you care enough to send the very best.”

Although companies usually have their own teams of writers and marketers, they often run competitions that pay big prizes to outsiders who can come up with a catchy line. Watch for these opportunities on television and in print, but your best chance of finding them may be online. Try one or more of these platforms:

  • Slogan Slingers helps companies create slogan contests in which their registered writers compete. It’s free to sign up as a writer, and the company claims you can “make up to $999 per contest (minus our small admin fee).”

7. Paid Consumer Research and Surveys:

  • Taking surveys in your spare time can be a great way to earn some extra dough fast. Check out Survey Junkie which will pay you instantly with cash via Paypal. They have over 6,000,000 members and they have an 8.9/10 rating on Trust Pilot.
  • SwagBucks:   Swagbucks is the largest online rewards site that gives free gift cards to its members for their online activities, such as Taking Surveys, Shopping, Searching the Web, Watching Videos, and Playing Games.
  • E-Poll:  E-Poll provides a convenient online forum to express your opinions on a variety of issues that affect your daily life. Earn a 100-point signup bonus when you register, which takes only about 5 minutes.  Begin earning now with E-Poll.  Inbox Dollars:  Be rewarded for watching tv, taking surveys, or making purchases online. • American Consumer Panel:  Easy to sign up. 6 Million Members. American Consumer Opinion:

8. Social Media Manager

Ironically, heading up a company’s Facebook, Twitter, or other social network can be perfect for an introvert. “It requires a lot of time online and not much interaction that’s not on the computer,” says Tony Lee, publisher of CareerCast, a job listing and advice site. Annual median salary: $54,170; projected growth by 2020: 12 percent.

9. Medical Records Technician

The medical field creates a massive volume of records on patients, whether from routine checkups or hospital visits. All of those medical records need to be organized and computerized. Medical records jobs typically involve filing and data entry and some positions are remote so you could do the work from home.

10.  Financial Analyst

Drawing on an introvert’s meticulous nature, this job requires analyzing the performance of stocks and bonds, studying business trends, and writing financial reports. “Financial analysts are really focused on doing numbers, very solitary work,” says Vincent. Annual median salary: $76,950; projected growth by 2020: 16 percent.

11. Machinist

Machinists work in factories and product manufacturing plants to operate various types of machinery to create precision metal or plastic parts based on particular specifications. Since those are loud environments with some potential hazards, you will wear protective eyewear and headphones while you work, which virtually eliminates small talk on the job.

12. Pet Care

The animal care industry is full of opportunities for introverts and shy people. Not only do you get to work with animals all day, but there is also almost no customer interaction—with human customers, that is. For animal lovers, that’s a win-win career move. Popular animal care jobs include:

13. Writer

Introverted people are often talented writers, and writing is a versatile career with many possible paths to explore. You could write nonfiction books or novels under your own name, or you could be a ghostwriter. Web content writing is also an option—writing copy for websites, articles, and blogs. Technical writers create user guides, instruction manuals and how-to documents for all sorts of products. As a writer, you would likely get to set your own schedule—as long as you meet deadlines—and work from anywhere you can take your computer and access the internet.

The Truth About Driving for Uber And A Better Alternative

March 12, 2018 by Frugal Prof

Dark Side of Driving for Uber

The Truth About Driving for Uber and Some Alternatives

Everyone wants to make extra money and create income on the side, but it’s important to do the proper due diligence to make sure your side hustle is worth your time.

Are you really making extra money?

A case in point is Uber, which research suggests may not be delivering extra money for it’s drivers.

Value Investing

*My aim is to recommend products that will truly benefit you.    I believe in transparency and want to disclose that I’ve included certain products and links to those products on this page that I will earn an affiliate commission for any purchases you make.

Many drivers make less than minimum wage driving for Uber:

A recent study using a couple of different methodologies, found earnings between $8.50-10 per hour after expenses, but a sizeable chunk of drivers still made less than minimum wage with those numbers.

Harry Campbell, a part-time Uber and Lyft driver who blogs as The Rideshare Guy, says it’s a familiar criticism.

“The number one complaint from drivers is that they don’t make enough,” Harry Campbell said.

Many Uber Drivers Quit:

  • One thing Uber can’t dispute is whether drivers stay driving with Uber.  They don’t.
  • 96% of Uber drivers leave the company within a year.
  • Driver retention has been an ongoing problem for ride-hailing companies, and that is likely to continue for the foreseeable future. One study released last year found that only 4% of Uber drivers stay with the job for more than a year.

Thin profit margins for Uber Drivers:  Uber Drivers’ median earnings amounted to $0.59 per mile driven, but median expenses came out to $0.29 per mile driven, according to the study’s original findings.

Those costs include:

  • vehicle maintenance
  • repairs, fuel,
  • insurance, and depreciation of the vehicle.

Before you start a Side Hustle:

In my previous post on Side Hustles, I detailed the questions you need to ask Before starting a side hustle. Two of the most important questions are:

  • does it actually make me money
  • and how much time is required.

It is now clear that Uber drivers make much less per hour than one would expect.  In addition, the wear and tear on a car makes it much less profitable.

The goal in a side hustle is to maximize your time and make the most money you can per hour.

The side hustle I recommend below offers pay of nearly $200 per assignment.  The difference is that before you can earn nearly 9X as much as an Uber driver, you need to invest some time and money.

A Much Better Alternative:  Loan Signing Agent

Why is this a Great Side Hustle?
(For more ideas, see my post 45 ways to increase your income.)

  • Great Money,
  • Flexible Schedule,
  • Minimal Costs, and Minimal Experience Required.

You can make $75 to $200 in a single signing, and a signing takes about an hour. Total work time including preparing and driving to the signing is about an hour and a half to two hours when you’re starting out. And a lot less as you become more experienced.

Part time loan signing agents generally do one to three signings per week, which is about $300 to $500 dollars extra a week. Full time agents  can do 3-8 signings in a day which is about $400 to over $1,000  dollars in a day.

You can start part-time and work around your existing work schedule since most signings occur on evenings and weekends.  Simply pick up work when you want, and keep your day job

You can get started with absolutely zero experience. There’s no resume checking prior to a loan signing. You’re hired simply based on your location in proximity to the loan signing.

You can work from home and be your own boss. Owning your own business can allow you to take advantage its many benefits, such as tax write-offs.

You have the ability to make money almost immediately.

In fact, they’ve had students make money within their very first week of getting started. click here to see some testimonials]

What is required: In order to earn 9X more than an Uber driver, you need to invest your time and money to become a loan signing agent.

Pretty straight forward.  But, the truth is that 95% of people want to make $100 an hour but won’t invest their time and money to make it happen.

  • To get your commission, you can study and take your test in a day, and have the ability to make money the very next month.
  • Ultra low startup costs. You can start a legitimate, cash flowing business for just a few hundred dollars. The biggest costs are a printer and your notary commission.
  • You can learn the loan signing skill in just a few hours and master it after just a few loan signings if you have a mentor or a system.

Who else recommends the Loan Signing System?  I heard about it from Pat Flynn, the Smart Passive Income Podcaster from Smart Passive Income.

The good news is that means it’s probably worth checking out.

The bad news is that because he is so respected, more and more people will learn about this great side hustle.  So, if you’re interested, you should check it out today.

More about the Loan Signing System

Conclusion:  The truth is that many Uber drivers are having a hard time making money.  And that is a shame.  Many are not even earning more than minimum wage.

On the other hand, the Loan Signing System seems to offer a much better alternative.  The reason is that the Loan Signing System enables you to learn a skill, which allows you to become valued in the marketplace and earn more money in a short amount of time.

And that is the goal of a good side hustle.

  • Surveys are typically much more interesting than other survey sites
  • Surveys usually only take 10 – 15 minutes each

10. You Gov: ($2 Sign-up Bonus)

When it comes to taking the most interesting surveys on the web, YouGov is where it’s at. When people get tired from taking  online surveys. This is when they look to YouGov.

You get to share your opinions about current events and take polls on issues that are current. Not only that, you get to see the opinions of others who take the same survey. In short, it’s more like a small community.

YouGov comes with a registration bonus of $2 and I can usually earn around $8 – $10 per hour. There’s quite a few surveys available, and I use this site to keep me on my toes.

Benefits:

  • $2 sign-up bonus
  • One of the most interesting survey sites on the web
  • Can cash out to PayPal or for gift cards
  • This survey site is more like a small community

  • Earn at a rate of roughly $8 – $10 per hour

Click here to Join You Gov:  for free.

Bonus: #1: Global Test Market (Great International Survey Site)

Global Test Market: is a great survey site for international users since they’re currently available to 49 different countries. Expect to earn at a rate of roughly $10 per hour.

Unfortunately, they have a lot of low-paying surveys, which is why I suggest to stick to only the few high-paying ones that they have. Otherwise, it’s not worth your time. Complete about 1-2 surveys per week and earn an extra $10 – $20 per month.

You need a minimum of $10 to cash out to either PayPal or for gift cards. Each time you refer your friend you get a bonus of 100 points.

  • Best international survey site on this list – available to over 49 countries
  • Can easily make an extra $20 per month by taking a short amount of surveys
  • Only need a balance of $10 to cash out
  • Great reputation for always paying out on time

Bonus #2: Inbox Dollars:($5 Sign-up Bonus)

The great thing about InboxDollars is that right off the bat they give you a $5 registration bonus. Although you can create some decent earnings with surveys alone, they also award you for other tasks. Earn cash watching videos, taking polls, playing games, shopping online and more.

The surveys don’t pay as much as the others on the list, but I find this as a pro rather than a con. It forces me to take a break from surveys and watch videos or complete some other task for easy cash.

If you stick to surveys alone, you can make about $5 – $10 per hour. To cash out you need a minimum balance of $30, and they give out prizes in the form of PayPal deposits as well as gift cards.

Benefits:

  • $5 registration bonus
  • Can complete other tasks aside from just surveys to earn cash
  • If you only take surveys, earn $5 – $10 per hour on average
  • Awards to PayPal as well as gift cards
  • A great way to take a break from your typical survey site

What To Look For In The Best Survey Sites

With so many survey sites out there claiming that you can make thousands, it’s difficult to determine what’s scam or legit. However, there are a key factors that you should look for:

  • Never pay for a survey site. Any legitimate survey site will ever ask for your payment information.
  • Sign-up bonuses. While not all of the good survey sites give you a bonus just for registering as a new user, it’s definitely a great incentive. Sometimes they can be as high as $5. I sometimes sign-up just for the sign-up bonus and then cash out once I meet the payment threshold. If I don’t like the site, I don’t continue.
  • Payment Thresholds. Most survey sites require you to reach a minimum balance before you can cash out. Be aware of this when you first sign-up. I’ve seen some for as little as $5 and some as high as $50. Yet keep in mind that those with a higher payout threshold usually pay much better.
  • Stick to high-paying surveys. I do my best to list surveys on this list that at least pay at a minimum rate of $10/hour. Calculate how much you can earn by dividing how much you earn by how long it takes in hours ($5 survey / .5 hours = $10/hour). Survey sites typically have low-paying surveys and high-paying ones. If you see a survey that doesn’t pay well, move on to the next one or wait for a new one to come out.
  • How and when they pay. This may be important depending on how quick you need the cash. I’ve seen survey sites pay out only once a month, whereas with others you can request a payout at any time. Furthermore, keep in mind what type of compensation they pay, whether it be gift cards or PayPal deposits. All of the sites have at least paid me once.
  • Privacy. Most of the time you don’t have to worry about this. Survey sites typically keep all of your answers anonymous, so there’s no way to link your opinions back to you. I made sure that all survey sites on this list meet this criteria.
  • Don’t forget to verify your email. When you register with the majority of these survey sites, they’ll require you to verify your email address.

11 Best Work at Home Companies Hiring (Hertz and Amazon!)

January 18, 2018 by Frugal Prof

Best work at home companies

11 Best Work at Home Companies Hiring

So many people wish they could find the right job that will allow them to stay at home.  In this post you will find 11 of the best work at home companies.  These are legit work at home jobs.  Real companies and great opportunities.

A Stanford University economics professor reports that people who work from home are happier and more successful than their colleagues who work in an office.

These work at home ideas are ranked in order of potential pay, either based on what was mentioned in the job listings themselves, or else in some cases by using estimates from Glassdoor.

1. Hilton, Remote Reservation Sales

Part-time job answering back-to-back calls for worldwide reservations. Open nights, weekends and holidays; flexible schedule required. (Glassdoor salary estimate: $10/hr)

This isn’t likely to be the job that gets you rich. At an estimated $10 an hour, and on a part-time schedule, you probably wouldn’t even hit a $21,000 annual salary. But, if you needed part-time, work-from-home work at an entry level, it could make sense.

2. Hertz, ExpressRent Sales Specialist

Fast-paced, sales driven, inbound call center position performed through a videolink system. Full-time position, with with possible shifts 8 am-8 pm EST, 7 days a week. Bonuses available. (Salary estimate from GlassDoor, $11/hr)

The estimated hourly rate isn’t much higher, but the fact that this is a full-time position obviously increases potential annual earnings.

Become a Certified Closing Agent.

You Earn Extra Income,  Set your Own Hours, and the Income is Fantastic!

($75-$200 per appointment).

• First of all, it’s great money! You can make $75 to $200 in a single signing, and a signing takes about an hour. Total work time including preparing and driving to the signing is about an hour and a half to two hours when you’re starting out. And a lot less as you become more experienced. Part time loan signing agents generally do one to three signings per week – about $300 to $500 dollars extra a week and full time agents can do 3-8 signings in a day which is about $400 to over $1,000  dollars in a day.

  • You can start part-time and work around your existing work schedule.
  • • You can get started with absolutely zero experience.
  • You can work from home and be your own boss.
  •  You have the ability to make money almost immediately.
  • What is required: In order to earn 9X more than an Uber driver, you need to invest your time and money to become a loan signing agent.  Pretty straight forward.
  • But, the truth is that 95% of people want to make $100 an hour but won’t invest their time and money to make it happen.
Learn More about the Loan Signing System here.

3. BrainFuse Careers, Online English Tutor

BrainFuse partners with colleges and universities to provide customizable online tutoring options. They’re looking for paper reviewers and live online English tutors. Flexible hours, requires college degree and one year of writing experience. ($12/hr — credit: The Penny Hoarder)

Again, the potential pay creeps up. At $12 an hour, you’re not going to retire young, but if you could pull together 40 hours a week at that rate, you’re looking at about $24,000–but without ever having to leave the house.

4. GameTime, Fan Happiness Associate

Customer service representative for new app focused on ticketing for major sporting and music events. College degree, experience with Windows and Zendesk (or other ticketing systems) required. 40 hours a week, 8 hour shifts, work from home. ($15/hr — credit: The Penny Hoarder)

At this potential salary, working out to roughly $30,000 per year, you’d be earning more than the average 20 to 24-year-old worker in the United States.

5. Westat, Field Recruiter

Seeking individuals in FL to act as field recruiters for individuals to participate in a Social Security Administration study. Requires local travel. (Salary estimate from Glassdoor, $15/hr)  The estimated potential salary seems about the same as the previous job, but given the local travel requirement, you should be able to either get reimbursed for mileage or take a tax deduction. Do that right and you should come out ahead.

6. Capital One, Senior Customer Service Representative

Field inbound calls and provide customer service in FL or VA. Requires H.S. degree, GED, or military service experience. (Salary estimate from GlassDoor, $33,000)

According to the job listing, this comes with the potential for medical insurance, paid time off, maternity leave, a retirement plan, and even continuing education.

Survey Junkie:  You can earn points through Survey Junkie and redeem them for cash or gift cards.  They give you 25 points just for filling out your profile.  Expect to make about $3 per survey.

7. Rosetta Stone, British English Online Language Instructor

Seeking a native British English speaker to conduct energetic online courses. Voice audition required; teaching experience desired. (Salary estimate from GlassDoor, $17.50/hr)

As the salaries increase, of course the job requirements and skills increase, too. They’re pretty specific about wanting native British English speakers here. Maybe you can binge watch episodes of The Crown or Downton Abbey to fake it–but I doubt that will work. If you can work out 40 hours a week doing this, you’d hit $35,000 per year.

8. Great Au Pair Services Manager

Responsible for overseeing operations and fiscal matters for Great Au Pair USA. Provides high level customer services and conflict resolution, reporting to the Vice President of Program Operations. (Salary estimate from GlassDoor, $36,000)

I think the key phrases here are “high level customer services” and “conflict resolution. For this kind of position, the estimated pay is good, but it seems like you’ll earn it. Of course, you’ll be working from home.

Value Investing

9. Xerox Applications Evangelist, Global Imaging Services

Lead the business apps expansion for small and medium businesses. Full time, regular virtual employee; does require travel. (Salary estimate from GlassDoor, $48,000)

This might be more accurately a “don’t work in the office” job than a “work from home” job. But the estimated salary looks like it’s higher, in order to compensate.

10. Amazon, Connect Specialty Consultant

Amazon Web Services is looking to hire consultants with experience in enterprise call centers. Requires 10+ years experience as an IT enterprise architect in customer-facing roles. (Salary estimate by GlassDoor: $113,000)

A caveat on this one: it’s a little difficult to find the exact same job on Glassdor, so the estimate here is for a position that seems somewhat similar. Of course, at these higher salary levels, we’re probably talking about a range, to be honest–with room for negotiation.

11. Salesforce, Strategic Account Manager

World’s #1 CRM is looking for sales-focused individuals in the Financial Services and Health & Life Sciences teams. WFH in CA, CO, GA, MN, NY, TX. (Salary estimate from GlassDoor, $127,000)

Great news: that $127,000 estimated salary is just the base; there’s likely to be a significant amount of commission involved, too. It’s a sales job, so of course you’d better know how to sell. Yes, it’s limited to six states–these jobs are listed largely to give you examples.

Getting Results: How I paid off $17K this year

December 28, 2017 by Frugal Prof

How I Paid off $17K in debt this Year

Your life as a business

It may seem unsentimental to think of your life as a business, but it is.  The fact is, every year there is a profit and loss to your financial life.  You’ve invested a year of your life and what do you have to show for it in financial terms?

Are you closer to your goals?

Are you closer to a comfortable retirement?

Are you building a financial foundation?

Are you still in debt?

For many years, I was running in place.  Instead of building a financial future, I was spending to make myself feel better today.

And my income would solve all of my financial problems.  Or, so I thought.

Looking back at this Year:

Looking back at this year, It’s easy to forget how much progress I’ve actually made.

  • My finances are back on track,
  • I’m debt free,
  • and my car is paid off.

I’ve tried to chronicle my decisions both good and bad the past year.   I became discouraged over the summer and I hit the wall after I had to miss a U2 concert because of a tax payment.

I was used to spending whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted.  So, planning my purchases and delaying gratification was a sacrifice I made this year. I make a good amount of money, but my spending was always going to limit my net worth.

I made big strides this year.  But, I’m not going to lie to you.  It was hard.  I put in a lot of work.

Here is the playbook I used.  It’s simple and straightforward.

Take Action:

  • I negotiated discounts on all of my recurring charges.
  • I switched to a less expensive gym,
  • I sold nearly $500 of my things on Ebay.
  • I stopped using a storage locker.
  • I started writing this blog.

Coming to terms with my spending habits: I tried to understand where my money was going.  I tried to slow down and learn why I wanted the stuff I was buying.  I learned to budget.  I set small financial goals and I hit them.

I cut back.  And I cut back even more.  I paid attention to every single penny. I paid attention to purchases that created true value in my life. And those that added minimal value, I cut out.

“If you can’t measure it, you can’t improve it.” –Peter Drucker, Author and Business Consultant

Get organized:  Creating a budget.  I created a budget using a free app, Everydollar.com.   It’s a very good app, but I didn’t keep using it.  What worked well for me was old school: keeping a notepad next to my credit card bills.  And keeping track of the good, the bad, and the unexpected in my monthly bills.  I was also keeping track of my bills in my head because I became VERY focused.

Read my post, 7 Tips To Help you Create a Budget here.

Take Action:  I negotiated discounts with almost every company I was doing business with.  I got discounts.  I got price reductions.  Ask for what you want.  Make sure you aren’t overpaying for the services you’re using.  Or cancel them.  I cancelled my storage locker.  I was paying nearly $99 a month to store items that I didn’t really need or want.

Results: Savings of ~ $600/ month. Total gain $6,000

Create Extra Income:  In my opinion, the easiest way to create extra income today, is to sell your excess stuff on Ebay.  It’s fast, easy, and convenient.  Within a week or two, you can have money coming in.  Also, it makes you realize how quickly our purchases lose value.

Results: $493 from EBay in one month.

Side hustle/ Create more income:  I started writing an investment column for the website, Seeking Alpha.  This was a side hustle.  And it fit my interest in the stock market and as a writer.  I wrote 78 articles for their site on undervalued stocks and those articles have received over 288,000 page views.  I was paid more than $5,000.

Trade time for money

Use your time to create income, not more expenses.

According to a New York Times article entitled, How much Do we Love TV?, the average American spends 5 hours and 19 minutes of television per day.  When I decided to get motivated, I realized that I preferred being active and trying to earn money instead of being passive and watching television.

At the very least, get paid for surveys while you watch TV.  Some pay up to $20/ Hour.  (More info here).

In my opinion, trading time for money will allow you to create the life you want.

Budget:  Essentially, a budget is the process of deciding what is really worth your money.  I cut out pizza from my budget.  Yes, delivery pizza didn’t seem worth the extra $12 compared with the store bought kind.

I decided my fancy gym wasn’t worth the extra $90 per month.  I unsubscribed from store e-mails to make mindless shopping less tempting.  I started to think about why I buy the things I buy.

Deciding what is worth your money (and your time), is a really helpful exercise.  Look at your credit card bills.  I cut back on convenience purchases like food delivery.  I was spending $44 a month on delivery alone.

Stay Motivated:  I’m a big Dave Ramsey fan.  He created the debt free genre.  And his podcast was very helpful to keep me motivated, especially when I hit the wall on this debt free journey.  And if you’re just beginning to get serious about your finances, his book is a must read.

Year- End Results: Budget cutbacks: $6,000 +Side Hustle: $5,000 + Car paid off: $6,000 = $17,000

The benefits:  Running my life more like a business means that each quarter and especially at year-end, there is a profit and loss to my financial life.  I actually know that I spent less than I made this year.  And that I made enormous progress financially.

I paid off my car.  I contributed to all of my retirement plans.  I paid my estimated taxes on time.  I created extra income to speed up the process.  I grew both financially and personally.

There is no doubt in my mind that you could have similar results in your own financial journey.

Go for it!

5 Reasons Ebay is Great for Quick Cash.

March 2, 2017 by Frugal Prof

When I decided it was time to get out of debt, I quickly realized Ebay was going to be my best friend.

quick cash

Use Ebay to create quick cash

*Affiliate Disclosure: This page contains affiliate links to products or services that I endorse.  I may receive a commission from our business partners.  I strive to only partner with high quality companies that I believe add value to my readers.

I love money. I love everything about it. I bought some pretty good stuff. Got me a $300 pair of socks. Got a fur sink. An electric dog polisher. A gasoline powered turtleneck sweater. And, of course, I bought some dumb stuff, too.

–Steve Martin

Momentum is critical when you’re getting out of debt or taking control of your personal finances.   And Ebay can help you get cash quickly.  In my opinion, Ebay is the best way to get fast cash.

Why do I like EBay so much? Here are five reasons:

1. It’s easy. Find stuff you already own, take pictures, add a listing, and a week later you have cash.

2. You control the entire process.  You get to choose the minimum price you are willing to accept, you control how much time you want to spend on it, you control when the auctions will end, it’s all controlled by you.

3. It creates cash quickly.  You can receive money for your items in 3-7 days.

4.  It is a reminder that you’re buying stuff you don’t really need.  The next time you think about buying something, you can remember the items you sold on Ebay.

(More on this from my post, Why We Buy What We Buy here.)

5. You find out the real value of items.  All these items we buy depreciate immediately and lose much of their value.  Seeing the sale price of items on Ebay is a nice reminder that our purchases retain little value.

This month I became really motivated to sell some of my stuff on EBay.  I sold 19 items and brought in $493 of cash to help pay off my car.

I sold:

  • old headphones,
  • dress shoes,
  • a day planner,
  • an old football card,
  • and a bunch of other items.

What I learned:  I don’t want to repeat this cycle of buying items, not using them and then trying to recoup their value on EBay.

It’s easier to avoid buying items that I don’t really need in the first place!

My main goal was to use Ebay to create some quick cash to help pay off my car. (Read about my last car payment here.)

However, if you have a discerning eye, it is possible to leverage  Ebay into a real business by flipping items.  It is a legitimate side hustle.  (More on Side Hustle ideas Here.)

I am not a big consignment shopper, but if I was, there is certainly a potential business using eBay.

One woman known in the media by her brand, Girlboss aka Sophia Amarosa, leveraged her eye for fashion into a successful store, brand, and following.  Her brand is worth around $100M and it all began with Ebay.

I never started a business. I started an eBay store, and ended up with a business. I never would have done it had I known it was going to become this big.  –Sophia Amoruso is the founder and CEO of Nasty Gal, which has grown to a $100 million-plus online fashion retailer

Creating fast cash: Tips for selling on Ebay.

Getting started:

Make sure you buy a few small items to create a rating.  Ebay keeps track of how many auctions you’ve had.  Ideally, you want to have a rating above 10 before you begin selling items.

This will allow you to become familiar with the process before you sell.

Quick tip:  Auctions that end on a weekend always attract the most bidders.

Lighting is very important.  My advice: Consider buying a light box if you will sell more than $1,000 in a year.  I believe they add about 10% to the value of an item, so it should pay for itself very quickly I really wish I had done this years ago.

Why lighting is important: High quality photos are very important and make it easier for your listings to sell.  And, your items will sell at a higher price.  The better lighting makes your items more attractive and they will stand out from the competition.  When you sell on Ebay, there are always competitive listings.

More on lighting here.

Be Honest:

Be honest about the quality/ condition of your items.  Positive feedback is important.  In the long run, it doesn’t make sense to embellish the condition of your items.

More Tips for Selling on Ebay:

  • The best days to start/ end an auction are Saturday/ Sunday afternoons EST.
  • You want the biggest audience for your items when they’re ending.
  • Make sure your item is worth selling.  Check what past auctions to get an idea of what your item it worth.
  • And make sure you consider the cost of shipping. It can cost up to $20 to ship shoes.
  • Remember to Sell in season. It’s hard to sell running sneakers in winter.
  • Having a PayPal account is very helpful. It’s worth having one even if you don’t want to use EBay.

Tools I recommend:

These are the minimum tools to get started:

Quality Shipping Tape

Label Scraper (amazingly helpful to remove price tags quickly and without danging the item)

Poly Mailer Bags for shipping

Good Bubble Wrap

Mister Clean Magic Eraser– To clean up books – Find the cheapest option

An acceptable and affordable shipping scale

A higher quality shipping scale

Quality  Lights for Ebay:  These were on sale ~$35 and they are great for the money.

Thank you stickers:  A classy touch:

Better pictures = higher profits on Ebay.  Lighting is very important.

Conclusion:

Keep in mind, EBay is a quick fix to create cash while you’re re-aligning your finances and getting out of debt.

But, for most people, it is not a long-term solution.

My Problem with Side Hustle Ideas and The Best Side Jobs

February 28, 2017 by Frugal Prof

side hustle ideas

I’m always exploring new ways to earn extra money.  Even better if you can find a way to make money fast.

In this post,  I will offer some smart questions that one should ask before buying into a side hustle. Next, I will offer one of the better side income ideas that I have found.

Earning money on the side is a great idea.  I am in favor of having more money for your family, money to pay off debt, and more income to live a better life.  Absolutely.

I want to make sure that you discover the best side hustle ideas.

  • *Affiliate Disclosure: This post contains affiliate links.  Business partners may compensate me for inclusion on this blog, but I strive to only partner with quality businesses and the reader pays nothing.

Side Hustle Meaning:

Side Hustle:  typically part-time jobs that allow one to make extra money.  Sometimes a side hustle involves making money online, but not necessarily.  Some side hustles involve working from home.

Let me start by saying I like the idea of side hustles- part time jobs or gigs that can earn you passive income online.  And I occasionally listen to podcasts from side hustle entrepreneurs like Pat Flynn and Nick Loper.

In my opinion, you need to analyze any potential side hustle idea critically before you commit to them. You are investing two valuable resources in any side hustle opportunity:  you are investing money and you are investing your time.

It’s not about the Money.  It’s about Taking Charge.

Questions you Need to consider before starting a side hustle:

1.  What is the probability this side hustle will make me money

Yes.  The main purpose of a side hustle is to make money.  I want an extra income.  I need cash.  Period.  So, the idea that you could invest in a side hustle course and not make money and possibly, lose money is something we want to avoid at all costs.

Just because there is a quote from someone on the internet claiming that they made money doesn’t mean much to me.  And also, When did this person make money?

Many opportunities no longer exist.

Value Investing

Flipping textbooks on Amazon via AMAZON FBA used to be a good money maker.  And then one day Amazon changed their fee structure.  Now, the people who did this side hustle are selling courses to teach a program that worked a few years years ago.

My concern with this side hustle is that you make an investment in inventory and Amazon can change their policy at any time.

It no longer works because Amazon eliminated the profit margin.  And it’s important to ask yourself, which other side hustle jobs have the potential to evaporate like this.

YouTube:  Recently, YouTube  changed their fee structure to smaller content providers.  You now need 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 hours of content to monetize your channel.

Realize that people had spent considerable time creating videos (and buying courses and video equipment), and now have almost no way to recoup their expenses.  They started a side hustle and lost both money and time.

My intention is to look critically at side hustles to prevent this from happening to you.

2.   How much time will I need to commit?

There are many side hustles that allow you to make an income rather quickly and others you need to wait for a payoff.

Some side hustle ideas that pay immediately include: Getting Paid to Drive:

Essentially, You can Get a Check This Week

  • People Join Door Dash for a variety of reasons: to spend time with their kids, earn extra money, to pay for school, even to exercise and see the world.  You can use any car to deliver, as long as you have a valid driver’s license, insurance, and a clean driving record. Join Door Dash
  • Get paid to drive for LYFT:  Visit the LYFT website and Use this Exclusive CODE: DOUG4287 for an Extra $1,400 payout.

3.  How much can I Earn vs. The Costs to begin?

The purpose of a side hustle is to make money.  One needs to consider a realistic estimate of how much money one is likely to make.  And what is the source of the information.

I could show you 100 Pinterest Pins that claim someone has quit their job to blog full time and is making a six figure income.  Blogging is not a great side hustle if you need extra income now.

In reality, that is the exception.  Blogging is competitive and requires a lot of time and commitment before someone can make money.

It can also be a great side hustle for the right person.  See my post on, The 7 Golden Rules to a Profitable Blog Here.

4.  Is this Side Hustle Idea still making money?

Do you know who is guaranteed to make money from a side hustle?  The person selling expertise, a funnel guide, or a side hustle program.

Is this Side Hustle idea still making money.  Is this side hustle idea still viable.

These are real questions.  And it requires research.  Right now, the Subway restaurant chain franchisees are suing the company for not supporting them with advertising.

Its being called a franchisee revolt.

You would never spend the $50,000 or $75,000 to invest in a Subway franchise after you learned this information.  Additionally, you would not want to invest in a side hustle course that is no longer viable.

5.  Does this Side Hustle add to my skill set?

Great question. A really good side hustle would add to your skill set as well as helping you earn extra money.

Become a Certified Closing Agent.

  • One big advantage of becoming a Closing Agent is that you learn a new skill.
  • You Earn Extra Income,  Set your Own Hours, and the Income is Excellent ($75-$200 per appointment).
  • You can get started with absolutely zero experience. You are hired simply based on your location in proximity to the loan signing.
  • Next, you can work from home and be your own boss. Owning your own business can allow you to take advantage its many benefits, such as tax write-offs.
  • • You have the ability to make money almost immediately.
  • It pays nearly 9X more than driving for Uber.  However, it requires you to take a class and invest time and money.
  • If you can do that, then you can start making up to $200 per signing.
  • Learn More about the Loan Signing System here

One of the Better Side Hustle Ideas I see:

This side hustle fits with all of the previous criteria I’ve mentioned.

You learn a valuable skill.

You earn an excellent fee of $75- $200 per appointment.

The up front costs are pretty small compared to the actual compensation.

Learn More about the Loan Signing Course.

Conclusion:

In this post we’ve reviewed the important questions you need to answer before you invest in a side hustle idea that’s being promoted.  Is this still a great side hustle idea.  Is this person selling a course because the idea is no longer profitable.  What’s the investment of time and money for this idea.  When will this side hustle make me money.  All legitimate questions.

My only interest is in helping you succeed.

And I would hate for you to invest your time and money into something that is no longer a viable side hustle idea.

I’ve explored a bunch of side hustles and for me, they took too much invested time for a pay off that may or may not come someday.

My time and money is valuable.  And I need that payoff.

Caveat emptor!  Buyer beware.
